Sickness Policy
Therefore, we have an exclusion policy for illnesses which are contagious to other children. We follow the local health authority guidelines on this matter.
| Illness | Exclusion Period |
| Antibiotics prescribed | 24 hours of the course with at least 2 doses administered |
| Athletes foot | Can attend but must keep feet covered at all times. |
| Chicken Pox | 5 days from when the rash first appeared with fully scabbed spots |
| Conjunctivitis | After medication |
| Covid-19 | Isolation period guided by NHS Track and trace service |
| C.Diff (Clostridium difficile) | Stay away for 48hrs from last diarrhea. |
| Diarrhoea/Sickness | 48 hours clear |
| Diphtheria | Must NOT attend until better. |
| Gastro-enteritis, food poisoning | 48 hours or until advised by the doctor |
| Flu | 5 days after onset of symptoms |
| Salmonella and Dysentery | 48 hours or until advised by the doctor |
| Glandular Fever | Until certified well |
| Headlice | To be treated straight away. Can remain in nursery |
| Hand, Foot and Mouth disease | During acute phase and while rash and ulcers are present |
| Hepatitis A | 7 days from onset of jaundice and when recovered |
| Hepatitis B | Until clinically well |
| Impetigo | Until the skin has healed or 48hrs after antibiotics treatment |
| Infective hepatitis | 7 days from the onset |
| Measles | 4 days from onset of rash, first day of rash classed as day 0 |
| Meningitis | Until certified well |
| Mumps | 5 days minimum or until the swelling has subsided |
| Pediculosis (lice) | Until treatment has been given |
| Pertussis (Whooping cough) | 48hrs from antibiotics or 21 days from onset of illness if no antibiotic treatment |
| Poliomyelitis | Until certified well |
| Ringworm of scalp | Until cured |
| Ringworm of the body | Until treatment has been given |
| Rubella (German Measles) | 5 days from onset of rash first day classed as day 0 |
| Scabies | Can return 24hrs after treatment as been given |
| Shingles | To be kept away from nursery if rash cannot be covered. |
| Slapped cheek | Can return when Rash is visible as no longer infectious. |
| Scarlet fever and streptococcal (Strep throat)+ Tonsilitis | Can return after 24hrs of antibiotics if no antibiotics can’t return |
| Tuberculosis | Until declared free from infection by a doctor |
| Typhoid fever | Until declared free from infection by a doctor |
| Temperature and seeming unwell | Exclusion until normal temperature returns and child is well in themselves. |
| Norovirus | 48 hours clear |
| E. coli | Excluded minimum of 48 hours – under 5s until evidence of microbiological clearance |
This list is not comprehensive and Abacus day nursery reserves the right to exclude children who are unwell with illnesses not included above.
